Left With Pictures are from London, and formed in 2005. They started with three hard-up, classically trained musicians – Stuart Barter, Rob Wicks and Toby Knowles – who forsook the orchestra pit for the sanctuary of Toby’s parents’ loft.
Armed with melodicas, guitars, violins, kazoos, ‘found sounds’ and a shoestring budget, they began with a self released EP in 2005. The arrival of this EP was marked with a release party at Clapham’s tiny Cafe Cairo, and the first 50 copies were given away free.
In 2006 the band played shows with Peggy Sue (then Peggy Sue and the Pirates!), Kate Nash, Sleeping States and a host of others, and released a second EP as part of the AsYet collective – (which also featured David Goo, Roxy Rawson, Miss Jo Williams, William Nein and more). The EP was entitled “Making Chalk”.
A download only single entitled Bows and Arrows followed in 2007 – which prompted a feature by Rosie Swash in The Guardian, admiration from various online reviewers, and a highly successful debut festival appearance at End of the Road.
In 2008 LWP signed to Organ Grinder Records, added two new members Tom Walker and Ed Seed – and released an EP entitled “Secretly” which was praised by The Guardian, Drowned in Sound, Time Out and others – as well as prompting their first ever slew of radio play.
The band also collaborated with Peggy Sue -releasing a vinyl only EP entitled “Body Parts” under the band name Peggy Sue and the Pictures.
In 2009 Left With Pictures played shows with Johnny Flynn, Micachu, The Leisure Society and Alessi’s Ark, were chamiponed by the likes of Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq, Bob Harris and Lauren Laverne, headlined London’s Bush Hall, embarked on a tour with support from the hotly tipped Broadcast 2000, and launched their debut album ‘Beyond Our Means’ at a sold out launch party at Hoxton Underbelly.
In 2010 – the band released a song and a video on the last Monday of every month. The project, called “In Time”, saw each new track premièred on Gideon Coe’s BBC6 Music show. The resulting album was released in March 2011.
Left With Pictures are currently creating their third album…
